The Dr. Henry & Sylvia Wong Foundation is proud to support the development of the Aria University School of Medicine (AUSOM), a new nonprofit private medical school in Stockton expected to bring transformative change to healthcare access, medical education, and the regional economy in the San Joaquin Valley. To help launch the initiative, the Foundation has donated $1 million.
San Joaquin County has long faced a shortage of physicians and specialists. A medical school based in Stockton will provide local students with the opportunity to train close to home—an important factor in retaining future doctors within underserved communities. For this reason, county officials, healthcare leaders, and regional institutions have strongly supported the project.
Groundbreaking on September 22, 2025
On the afternoon of September 22, 2025, Dr. Henry Wong attended the official groundbreaking ceremony for AUSOM. The event drew substantial regional and federal attention, with Congressmembers, mayors, members of the County Board of Supervisors, and university leadership present to celebrate the milestone.
Dr. Wong was joined by his friends Laura and Alice at the ceremony—a meaningful moment that underscored the Wong Foundation’s long-standing commitment to public service.

County Partnership and University Plans
San Joaquin County has granted AUSOM use of a county-owned building through a 30-year lease at just $1 per year, enabling funds to be directed toward extensive renovation, faculty recruitment, and educational infrastructure. The medical school will be located near San Joaquin General Hospital, strengthening clinical training opportunities and helping to anchor a long-term health workforce pipeline in the region.
Aria University, a Milpitas-based nonprofit institution, is guiding the development of the medical school. The program is currently in the Applicant phase of the LCME accreditation process—the first formal milestone toward full accreditation.
Recognition from Aria University
In appreciation of the Foundation’s support, the University has announced plans to honor Dr. Henry Wong and the late Sylvia Wong with:
- A plaque and portrait at the school’s entrance,
- An endowed faculty position named “The Wong Foundation Professor,” and
- A dedicated office bearing the Foundation’s name.
These recognitions reflect the Foundation’s ongoing mission to invest in education, healthcare, and community advancement.
Looking Ahead
The groundbreaking marks the beginning of a multi-year journey involving construction, accreditation preparation, faculty hiring, and eventual student admissions once accreditation milestones are met. With the support of the Wong Foundation and other community partners, AUSOM aims to become a cornerstone institution that improves access to quality healthcare in the San Joaquin Valley for decades to come.
